Our world is material. Here are some objects that occupy the worlds, move the lives, and tell the stories of Singaporean Tamil women. These are a part of the ever-evolving assemblage of the Thamizhachi, perpetually ‘under construction’.
பொருள்வகையால் உருவானதே நம் உலகம். சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் பெண்களின் உலகை ஆக்கிரமித்து, வாழ்க்கையை வழி நடத்தி, அவர்களின் கதைகளைச் சொல்லும் சில பொருட்கள் இங்கே உள்ளன. இவை நிரந்தர கட்டுமானத்தில் உள்ள, வளர்ந்து வரும் தமிழச்சியின் சேகரிப்பில் ஒரு பகுதியாகும்.

The Singaporean Tamil woman is not a singular type of person. Here are some Thamizhachis, who are each ‘Singaporean’, ‘Tamil’, and ‘woman’ in ways shared, and of their own making. These profiles include the collaborating participants and creators of this digital museum. Several additional persons are highlighted as ‘Singaporean Tamil women,’ whose faces, lives, and work are also those of this community.
சிங்கை தமிழ் பெண் என்பவள், ஒற்றை வகையான நபர் அல்ல. ‘சிங்கப்பூரர்’, ‘தமிழரர்’, மற்றும் ‘பெண்’ என்ற அடையாளங்களை பகிர்ந்து கொண்டு, தம் அடையாளங்களை சுயமாக தயாரித்த சில தமிழச்சிகள் இங்கே உள்ளனர். இந்த சுயவிவரங்களில், நமது இலக்கமுறை அருங்காட்சியகத்திற்கு ஒத்துழைத்த பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் மற்றும் படைப்பாளிகள் உள்ளனர். பல கூடுதல் நபர்களின் முகங்கள், வாழ்க்கைகள் மற்றும் தொழிலும் இந்த சமூகத்தை சார்ந்துள்ளதால், அவர்களும் ‘சிங்கை தமிழச்சிகளாக’ இங்கே சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகிறார்கள்.
About Thamizhachi
The Construction
‘Thamizhachi: a digital museum of Tamil Women under construction’ is a Brown Voices project, presented under T:>Works’ N.O.W. festival 2021. The presentation of this digital museum is also extended in Rasanai, a lecture-performance, under the same festival.
Thamizhachi and Rasanai are conceptualised by curator-researcher Vithya Subramaniam, and supported by the directorial work of Grace Kalaiselvi, and Raj Thiagaras’ writing and translations. This team from Brown Voices extends their appreciation to N.O.W. festival director Noorlinah Mohamed, and intern Sai Lalitha Aiyer for their support, work, and excitement over these many months.
The digital museum was put together through a series of consultative workshops conducted with twenty-two self-identified ‘Singaporean Tamil women’. The museum features their comments on all objects, as well as some objects highlighted and contributed by them. The team thanks our participants for trusting us with their ideas, stories, and enthusiasm for this museum. The participants and their individual ways of being a Thamizhachi form the basis of the ‘Persons’ page.

“தமிழச்சி: கட்டுமானத்தில் உள்ள, தமிழ் பெண்ணின் இலக்கமுறை அருங்காட்சியகம்”, T:>Works நிறுவனத்தின் N.O.W. 2021 விழாவின் ஒரு அங்கமாக, Brown Voices குழுவால் படைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த இலக்கமுறை அருங்காட்சியகத்தின் படைப்பு, இதே விழாவில் இடம்பெறும் “ரசனை” எனும் விரிவுரை நிகழ்ச்சியிலும் நீடிக்கும்.

‘சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் பெண்கள்’ என்று சுய அடையாளம் கண்ட இருபத்தி இரண்டு பெண்களுடன் நடத்தப்பட்ட தொடர் ஆலோசனை பட்டறைகள் மூலம் இந்த இலக்கமுறை அருங்காட்சியகம் உருவானது. அனைத்து பொருட்களைப் பற்றி அவர்கள் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட கருத்துக்களும், அவர்களால் முன்னிலைப்படுத்தப்பட்டு தருவித்த சில பொருட்களும் அருங்காட்சியகத்தில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன. இந்த அருங்காட்சியகத்திற்கான அவர்களின் கருத்துக்கள், கதைகள் மற்றும் உற்சாகம் அனைத்தும் எங்களை நம்பி தாராளமாக பகிர்ந்த எங்கள் பங்கேற்பாளர்களுக்கு நமது குழு தங்களின் மனமார்ந்த நன்றியை தெரிவிக்கிறது. நமது பங்கேற்பாளர்களும், தமிழச்சியாக இருப்பதற்கான அவர்களின் தனிப்பட்ட வழிகளும் ‘நபர்கள்’ பக்கத்தின் அடிப்படையாக அமைகின்றன.
The Museum
This digital museum is a work-ever-in-progress that seeks, in part, to spotlight and remedy the ‘invisibility’ of the Singaporean Tamil woman in the narratives, memories, spaces, cultural productions, and popular discourse of her own nation.
The lives, stories, and presence of these women assert right of place and legitimacy by leveraging on the authority of the museum form. However, objects are not simply selected on some notion of aesthetic or cultural ‘value’. Instead, the objects of this museum consciously refuse essentialised, homogenised, and/or tokenistic representations of the diverse ways of being a Singaporean Tamil woman.
The objects in this museum are everyday objects. They are things that are part of the Singaporean Tamil woman’s everyday, and of several other everydays in Singapore. In highlighting such objects, this museum underscores that the lives of racial and gender minorities are no less present in the same things many others use, make, buy, want, keep, give, and share. Their lives, though, move in its own rhythms around and through these objects, carving distinct memories and meaning with these materials.
The Thamizhachi is present in everyday things, in everyday spaces, in Singapore’s everyday. The Thamizhachi is a construction-ever-in-progress, she is not to be reduced to a token, her presence is not to be passed over.

இந்த அருங்காட்சியகத்தில் உள்ள பொருட்கள், அன்றாட பொருட்களே. அவை சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் பெண்ணின் தினசரி வாழ்க்கையின் ஒரு பகுதியாகும், சிங்கப்பூரில் உள்ள பல தினசரி வாழ்க்கை விஷயங்களை சார்ந்தும் உள்ளன. அன்றாட பொருள்களை முன்னிலைப்படுத்துவதன் மூலம், இன மற்றும் பாலின சிறுபான்மையினரின் வாழ்க்கையானது பலர் பயன்படுத்தும், தயாரிக்கும், வாங்கும், விரும்பும், வைத்திருக்கும், கொடுக்கும் மற்றும் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளும் அதே விஷயங்களிலும் எந்தவித குறைப்பாடும் இல்லை என்பதை இந்த அருங்காட்சியகம் அடிக்கோடிட்டுக் காட்டுகிறது. இருப்பினும், அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை இந்த பொருட்களுடன் தனித்துவமான நினைவுகளையும் பொருளையும் செதுக்கி, இந்த பொருள்களைச் சுற்றியும் அதன் மூலமாகவும் அதன் சொந்த தாளங்களில் நகர்கிறது.
