This hooked-tip knife is used in rubber tapping, to slice the tree bark and encourage latex secretion.
First European ‘biological racism’ saw the Tamil as innately adept, then Indenture and migration policies kept Malayan plantation labour largely Tamil—in particular, a 1902 Government of India warning that the Straits Settlements should not seek to recruit labour from outside the Madras Presidency, it’s ‘natural source of labour supply’.
These policies allowed for the recruitment of women and migration of families, hence Tamil women came to make up half the plantation workforce.
