காப்பூசி
The ubiquitous safety pin is the secret to keeping a sari tightly on and its pleats neatly laid. Elder women seem to always have an extra one on them. A Tamil woman’s thali is an especially favoured place to hang spare safety pins from.
As willing as a Tamil woman would be to aid anyone in need of one, Tamil superstition (and sensibilities) dictates that pins are never passed hand to hand but must instead be placed on an intermediary surface to be picked up by the recipient.
எங்கும் பரவலாக தென்படும் காப்பூசி, ஒரு புடவையை இறுக்கமாக வைத்திருப்பதற்கும் மடிப்புகளை நேர்த்தியாக வைப்பதற்கும் மிக பயனுள்ளதாக உள்ளது. மூத்த தமிழ் பெண்கள் எப்போதும் அவர்கள் மீது கூடுதல் ஒரு காப்பூசியை வைத்திருபதாக தெரிகிறது. ஒரு தமிழ் பெண்ணின் தாலி என்பது கூடுதல் காப்பூசியை தொங்கவிட உகந்த இடமாகும்.
ஒரு தமிழ் பெண் எவருக்கும் உதவி செய்ய விரும்பினாலும், தமிழ் மூடநம்பிக்கை (மற்றும் உணர்வுகள்) காரணமாக, காப்பூசிகளை ஒருபோதும் நேரடியாக கையில் கொடுப்பதில்லை. மாறாக, ஒரு இடைநிலை மேற்பரப்பில் வைக்கப்பட்டு, பிறகு அதை பெறுநரால் எடுக்கப்படவேண்டும்.
