Made of a long bamboo handle and bristles from the stiff midribs of the coconut leaves, these brooms were largely used by municipal workers of the Public Works Department for sweeping roads and public compounds.
Tamil women in these sectors began arriving in the 1920s, through assistance such as the Tamil Immigration Fund (1917–1938).
Tamil women today, including many from Malaysia, continue to sustain the cleaning and sanitation sector in Singapore.

மலேசியாவைச் சேர்ந்த பலர் உட்பட தமிழ் பெண்கள் இன்று சிங்கப்பூரில் துப்புரவு மற்றும் சுகாதாரத் துறையைத் தொடர்ந்து பராமரித்து வருகின்றனர்.
