The start of a Tamil girl’s menstruation is especially marked in Tamil custom. A ‘sadanggu’ or puberty ceremony is a key life-cycle event, wherein the young girl is brought gifts, then ritually anointed and showered by the women of her family.
During her first period, Tamil girls are given several special foods to soothe and strengthen her. One simple and popular prescription is a spoonful of gingelly oil and a raw egg, to be had everyday for the first sixteen days.
ஒரு தமிழ் பெண்ணின் முதல் மாதவிலக்கின் தொடக்கத்தை கொண்டாடுவது தமிழ் மரபாகும். ‘சடங்கு’ அல்லது பூப்புனித நீராட்டு விழா என்பது, ஒரு பெண்ணுக்கு முக்கிய வாழ்க்கை நிகழ்வாகும். பருவமடைந்த இளம்பெண்ணுக்கு சீர்வரிசை கொண்டு வரப்பட்டு, பின்னர் அவளது குடும்பத்தின் பெண்களால் சடங்கு முறையில் நீராட்டி அலங்கரிக்கப்படுகிறாள்.
அவளது முதல் மாதவிலக்கு நிகழும்போது, அவளுக்கு ஊட்டச்சத்து வழங்கவும் வலியை போக்குவதற்கும் தமிழ் பெண்களுக்கு பல சிறப்பு உணவுகள் வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. முதல் பதினாறு நாட்களுக்கு, தினமும் ஒரு தேக்கரண்டி நல்லெண்ணையும் ஒரு மூல முட்டையும் உண்பது மிக்க எளிமையான, பிரபலமான மருந்தாகும்.

I just had to eat raw egg and ‘nallenney’ (gingelly oil) once, and after my grandma and mum saw how much I struggled to keep it down, they took mercy on me. So I only had it that one and only time. (Nasihah)
