‘Villupaatu’ Music Video
‘வில்லுப்பாட்டு’ இசைக் காணொளி
‘Villupaatu’ is a form of musical story-telling, previously popular in Tamil villages. Here, Singaporean bilingual (Tamil/English) rap artiste, Lady Kash, travels to Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu to explore the intersections between ‘villupaatu’ and rap.
This video also presents a different construction of ‘homeland’—one not tied to biological bloodlines or migration, but to art. It thus offers a means of connection to many Tamils of the ‘old’ diaspora.
Lady Kash also represents the artistic Tamil woman beyond the ‘traditional’ forms lauded in the national discourse.

முன்பு தமிழ் கிராமங்களில் பிரபலமான ‘வில்லுபாட்டு’ என்பது, கதைகளை இசை மூலம் சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு வடிவம்,. இங்கே, சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் ராப் இசைக் கலைஞரான லேடி காஷ், தமிழ்நாட்டின் கன்னியாகுமரிக்குச் சென்று ‘வில்லுபாட்டு’ மற்றும் ராப் ஆகியவற்றுக்கு இடையிலான ஒற்றுமைகளை ஆராய்கிறார்.
இது உயிரியல் சார்ந்த வம்சாவழி அல்லது இடம்பெயர்வுடன் பிணைக்கப்படாமல், கலையோடு பிண்ணப்பட்ட ‘தாயகம்’ என்ற கட்டுமானத்தை வித்தியாசமான முறையில் முன்வைக்கிறது. இது ‘பழைய’ புலம்பெயர்ந்தோரின் வம்சத்தை சேர்ந்த பல தமிழர்களுக்கு பொருத்தமான இணைப்பு வழியை வழங்குகிறது.
மேலும், தேசிய சொற்பொழிவில் பாராட்டப்படும் ‘பாரம்பரிய’ கலைகளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட கலையாற்றல் படைத்த தமிழ் பெண்ணையும் லேடி காஷ் பிரதிநிதிக்கிறார்.

Creating the song “Villupaattu” was a journey more than a project. I literally travelled places to bring the origins and story of this artform and Poongani Amma to life. As a Singaporean Indian girl, I took it upon myself as a duty, to play my part in helping to preserve and educate global people about our ancient Tamil art forms. Especially one which I personally believe, was and is the seed of rap in India. Villupaattu. We should be aware of our roots and never forget them. (Lady Kash)

Rap and Hip-hop is a genre dominated by men locally, regionally or internationally. So to have a lady, from Singapore, making music from such a purposeful place to highlight forgotten traits and heritage that we ourselves might not be aware of, needs to be celebrated and more importantly, shared and spoken about more.
